N88 Speed Control Package Installation Instructions

Chrysler Speed Control
AKA 'Auto Pilot' & 'Cruise Control'

Article by Barry Washington

We are going to attempt to cover some history on this extra cost option with details on some parts that are model specific and other parts are interchangeable.

For this article, the focus will be from 1968 & up into at least 1976.

The sales code for Auto Pilot from 1966 through 1968 is 473. For 1968 through at least 1980 the sales code for Speed Control is N88.

This option was available on B, C & E-bodies & some newer body types also.

It was also possible for any dealership to add Speed Control to a car if the client requested it & of course was willing to pay for it.

You can also source the original used & / or NOS parts to add them yourself, more on that later...

Just for fun, let's open up a vintage NOS kit part number 3769294 dated later in 1975 during the 1976 model year to see what parts were included. (keep in mind that other parts were not included in this kit like the turn signal stalk, wiring harness & speedometer cables)

As you can see, the label mentions the servo, but there are many more parts inside:

Inside the box was this secondary small parts envelope with part number 3837761 that had come open over the years & spilled its contents into the main box:

Here is a view of all the parts inside. From top left to right & top to bottom are the servo, servo to inner fender mounting bracket, the various mounting nuts, two hose clamps for the vacuum line, a single wire tie, the lost motion link to attach the servo control cable to the carburetor, the special brake light switch with dual blue leads.

Then in the bottom row we have the accessory cable clamps needed for small block applications (green) & the one for big block applications (zinc) these are servo cable guide brackets:

Lets go over the date codes seen above, we'll start with the box label. It was packaged on October 22, 1975:

The internal parts envelope was packaged on the 117th day of 1975:

The servo assembly was completed on the 295th day of 1975:

The last date coded part found in this box is the bracket for the brake light switch, 293rd day of 1975:
